Is Thorn Apple safe for dogs and cats?

DOGS: SAFE
CATS: SAFE

Thorn Apple is generally considered safe for both dogs and cats. As with any food or plant, moderation is sensible and individual animals may react differently. This is hawthorn (Crataegus). Datura, also called thorn apple, is highly toxic - see Jimson Weed.

The details

The ASPCA's thorn apple is hawthorn (Crataegus), a hedge and garden tree with small red berries, and it is non-toxic to dogs and cats. But "thorn apple" is also a common name for jimson weed (Datura stramonium), which is highly toxic. If the plant had trumpet-shaped flowers or spiky seed pods, it was jimson weed, not hawthorn.

Signs to watch for

Usually none. Eating a lot of berries may cause vomiting or diarrhoea, and the thorns can cut the mouth or paws.

What to do if your pet eats it

First, check which plant it was. If it had trumpet-shaped flowers or spiky seed pods, treat it as jimson weed and call your vet straight away. For hawthorn, make sure your pet has fresh water, check its mouth and paws for thorns, and call your vet if vomiting or diarrhoea lasts more than a day.
