Chocolate is toxic to both dogs and cats and should be kept well out of reach of all pets. Even small amounts can cause adverse reactions in some animals.
Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which dogs and cats break down far more slowly than people do. The darker and more bitter the chocolate, the more dangerous it is: baking chocolate and cocoa powder are the worst, milk chocolate less so, and white chocolate contains very little.
Vomiting, diarrhoea, restlessness, excessive thirst and a racing heart, and in severe cases tremors or seizures. Signs usually appear within 6 to 12 hours.
Call your vet or an animal poison line straight away, even if your pet seems fine. Tell them the type of chocolate, roughly how much was eaten, when, and your pet's weight.
